I don’t particularly want to have to wait until my posts/comments have been reviewed to be able to fix mistakes – surely it lessens the probability that they shall be accepted anyway.

I agree.
But until someone implements such feature, here is the hack: you can copy contents of message, delete message, and make new message from pasted content + changes.
There is a chance that message will be accepted before you delete it, but in such case edit option will be available.
