[tor-project] UX team meeting notes, July 5th

Hello,

Thanks to everyone who made it to yesterday’s UX Team meeting. We’re looking forward to seeing you all again in a week’s time on July 12th.

This week we selected the surveys we need migrated as part of the planned LimeSurvey upgrade, briefly reviewed the team kanban for Q3, and discussed the most recent usability testing session Nah has conducted with a user from a censored region.

Here are the minutes:

== Agenda ==

Evergreen items:

  1. Announcements :mega:
  2. Weekly planning :date:
  3. Check-in with user support :speech_balloon:

Discussion items for this week only:

  1. Limesurvey upgrade and migration: https://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/tpa/team/-/wikis/policy/tpa-rfc-26-limesurvey-upgrade
  • Nah has a number active surveys being used to collect training feedback from East Africa
  • Nah will check-in with Gus re: timings, as the Sysadmin team are planning to shut down the old Limesurvey instance on August 1st

Preserve the structure only:

Migrate data AND structure:

List of surveys that are currently active:

  1. Review Q3 roadmap: https://gitlab.torproject.org/groups/tpo/-/boards?label_name[]=UX%20Team&label_name[]=Q3

  2. Connect Assist test with a user in a restricted region:

  • First time using Tor Browser
  • Participant was able to download Tor Browser without a VPN using a mirror
  • It took Tor Browser exactly 1:30 min to identify that Tor was blocked
  • Then, it took 3:30 to find a bridge and connect
  • They were confused at why it was taking so long, and went to preferences, but didn’t understand how to make additional changes
  • Ideas for additional improvements include:
  • Region-based messages to set expectations re: bootstrapping time (for those who have consented to location-shared), like “It can take up to 20 minutes to connect to Tor from China”
  • Intelligent/contextual help text within connection settings, e.g. “Works best in China” next to the option for Snowflake
