Cannot open any site correctly with Tor

My internet bandwith is better/faster than before I had this problem. 60Mb download/50Mb upload. I’m sure something else is causing this. Where do I find the logs? I tried in the opening post but didn’t figure it out.

You can try this:

https://support.torproject.org/glossary/tor-log/

Thanks for that. Unfortunately on my version (11.5) nothing of that can be found in that hamburger menu. Where can you find the logs on version 11.5?

It’s under the hamburger menu → preferences → connections (on the left side) and then scroll down.
Or hamburger menu → preferences and search for log in the searchbox ; )

Ok I found it.

Did you try what happens if you configure and use a different bridge than dktoke?

Bridge ‘dktoke’ has both an IPv4 and an IPv6 address

I wonder why your log says it has an IPv6 address…it doesn’t have (and is down at the moment of writing).

No idea why it says “dktoke”, when I check the connection it says “obfs4” bridge. See:

“dktoke” is the name of the bridge “obfs4” is the type of the used protocol. And like @Kasv mentioned: the Used bridge is down/offline (see his link). You should use his tip and try another one.

I don’t get it. If it’s down, it shouldn’t even open anything, but it does… well some websites. It just does not open it correctly. See the example I showed above.

I tried a few other bridges but it always says dktoke on the log. Maybe I’m not adding it correctly. Can someone please tell me how to add a different bridge? The Tor manual is useless, it’s like a manual for a different app.

I tried diferent bridges and it didn’t change the result. Maybe I didn’t do it properly. Can you help please?

Sorry you’re having issues.

I think I know what could be going on. Tor Browser is alternating between using the first two bridges in your set-up, so it will choose the faulty bridge ‘dktoke’ as a first hop for some of the websites you visit.

Do you mean that you removed all of the bridges listed in your screenshot? The important things is to remove the ‘dktoke’ bridge (the first bridge in your screenshot), then see if the problem persists.

If you did completely remove all of the bridges you had, and are still experiencing issues… well then I don’t know what’s going on.

Where do you see that? Bridges on screenshot are:

Yes I removed it. I’m currently connected to this one: Relay Search

The problem remains the same, it is something else. Hackers??

Oops. I was wrong. Thank you for correcting me.

I assume you have tried to completely remove the browser and run the installer again?

yes that was one of the first things I did

You can try to isolate the problem by using different browser in combination with already installed Tor (by setting SOCKS proxy to 127.0.0.1:9150). If problem persists, then try not only different browser, but also different installation of Tor (“Expert Bundle” [topic]).

From what I see in logs, problem may be not on your side, but with Tor Browser or ‘dktoke’ bridge. Sadly, it looks like developers rarely visit this forum, which makes it not much useful for solving non-trivial problems :frowning:

Nothing seems to work. The problem could be my device (hacked). I will have to keep using Brave for now. Thanks guys for all the replies!

If you mean your operating system, then you can install clean operating system and Tor Browser on USB stick (for example, ask someone with for sure non hacked devices), disconnect your HDDs/SSDs and boot from USB. Such test will exclude problem sources on your disks.

It’s completely up to you, but I myself would not use a device that I believed to be compromised by malicious software or the like. But this issue might not be related to malware.

It leads me to believe that the issue is with your OS’ software or configuration. You are running Windows 8.1, quite an old OS with very few users, so I think very few TB users/developers have actually tested TB against that OS. Do you have any chance of upgrading to Windows 10? If not, and you really would like to use TB on your device, you could wipe it and re-install Windows 8.1 to see if that fixes the issue. But maybe you’ve already considered this.

I have no choice but to continue with the same device for now. I will consider upgrading OS but Linux would be preferable.
