In case you only want/need to compile from source because the Debian
repository does not have a newer Tor version, you could try Debian
backports. I’ve been talking to a bunch of relay/bridge operators having
that problem and using backports helped them. There are a bunch of
guides on the Internet, e.g.

which could be useful for you in that case.
